The internal CFD analysis considered the heat load, rack layout and cooling strategy within the data hall. We also examined and made alterations to the position of the racks and provided design details for customised air vents suitable to reduce air velocity and counteract turbulence . The external CFD analysis focused on the recirculation of ejected heat from the cooling plant, the plant positioning on the roof and the orientation of that plant relative to the building layout and the surrounding structures. The third CFD study involved a plume analysis of the generator exhaust, and was necessary to ensure the operation of the generators did not raise the levels of exhaust gases above acceptable limits within the facility.

35kw/rack
This project pushed the envelope in fresh air cooling by utilising CFD modelling to precisely engineer airflow patterns and cooling infrastructure to ensure stable cooling within a high density environment capable of delivering 35kw per rack. On this project we provide design guidance on the shape of the build, the supply and return plenums, the aisle containment structure and the cabling containment arrangement. During the external analysis we considered the risk of air recirculation from the hot exhausts to the cold intake, taking account of the building orientation, the surrounding landscape and nearby tree line.

Telecoms Provider (Retrofit)
Saudi Arabia
Size 30,000sqm
22MW
Our study for a leading Saudi Arabian mobile provider involved onsite measurement of all aspects of the cooling infrastructure to give a instantaneous snapshot of the operation of 21 data centre facilities. With this data we created models on over 45 rooms within these facilities. Following on from this analysis a program of retrofitting was developed for the upgrade of each facility to ensure he ultimate efficiency and energy reduction was achieved while increasing the reliability of each facility
